Creativity Book to Cure Writer’s Block: The Artist’s Way or Lifesigns?

I want to share a story about a well-loved creativity book called The Artist Way. Do you have a creative process to cure writer's block or spark creative brilliance? When the ideas don't pop into your head, or words don't flow onto paper and traditional creativity models fail you, have you considered a spiritual approach to creativity?

The Artist's Way by Julia Cameron

Cure Writer’s BlockMany years ago, after I began writing I had the oddest experience, a book showed up in our home; it was The Artist's Way by Julia Cameron. When I say a book "showed up" that's exactly what I mean. This book appeared out of nowhere. I thought it was my partner's and she thought it was mine. Weeks passed, and then I inquired about it. It was then we realized neither one of us knew where it had come from.

Of course to me, mysterious unexplainable things are a signpost that the Universe is trying to get my attention. I picked up the book, read the jacket and began reading it. As a writer and someone who had been using my own unique creativity process I was very intrigued by this book; which is another spiritual approach for invoking creativity. What intrigued me was that the things Cameron was suggesting I was innately already doing, but as I read further I realized my process was different and in some ways The Artist's Way conflicted with Alex's way.

An Unconventional Way to Cure Writer's Block

When I began writing over 15 years ago, and tapped my creative source, I realized that the Universe was sending me messages through signs, which I've affectionately dubbed Lifesigns. I came to realize that as a writer who becomes absorb in my work, when I walk away from my computer my mind doesn't leave my story. At the time, I didn't realize that I was querying the Universe about what would happen in my story next. Can you imagine my surprise when I found the answers unfolding in my own life through signs? Yes, the answers revealed themselves through synchronicity, serendipity and mysterious unexplained events which I prefer to call miracles.

I took my creativity process a step further and tested it with everyday life to see if, rather than posing questions about my characters, I could ask questions about my own life. What I learned was life changing, which is why I wrote Lifesigns: Tapping the Power of Synchronicity, Serendipity and Miracles.

Creativity Book to Cure Writers BlockA Spiritual Creative Process

What I found fascinating is that while my process and Cameron's process conflicts at times, they both work. Not all creativity processes are the same. In fact, some will conflict or not resonate with some users. I believe each of us has the ability to make pacts with Spirit about how we choose to communicate with the Universe. The creative process educates us on how to converse with our higher power. We're all unique which is why we communicate differently and interpret signs differently. We each can find a process however that works for us, and then with consistent use establish a reliable, unfailing dialog with Spirit.

Creativity Books

At the heart of the Lifesign Process (which is demonstrated in my creativity book) is a spiritual approach to invoke the creative muse. Books like Cameron's and Lifesigns are excellent tools to tap the creative world, ignite imagination and disband writer's block. Like any process, whether choosing Lifesigns or The Artist's Way consistency and regular use improve our ability to accurately recognize and interpret the Universe's messages.

Someone once told me, "If it ain't broke don't fix it." If you have a creativity process that works for you, use it – don't lose it. If you don't have one however, consider a spiritual approach to creativity. The Artist's Way and Lifesigns: Tapping the Power of Synchronicity, Serendipity and Miracles offer unique methods to tap creative brilliance, which is needed in our world today more than ever.

Lifesigns: Tapping the Power of Synchronicity, Serendipity and Miracles is available in paperback and eBook.
